Synopsis
Meet the Hoovers, everything but a boring American family: father Richard is helplessly optimistic and equally unsuccessful 'speaker', mother Sheryl is constantly exhausted by keeping family secrets, particularly those related to her suicidal brother who has been recently dumped by his lover, the seven year old daughter, heavily short sighted Olive, with thick glasses still wants to become Miss Universe and Dwayne is full of rage, completely into Nietzsche and wants to join the American Air Force. The grandfather is a separate issue; he was thrown out of the retirement home for – doing heroin. What presently does not seem as an image of a desirable, role model family will change when all of them fit in a mini VW bus and set out on a three day trip to California where the youngest, Olive, has her debut on a merciless beauty pageant called Little Miss Sunshine. Or in simple words – they will become happy losers in a crowd of the winning and only winning obsessed nation.
Premiering at Sundance the film made every single person in the audience stand on their feet.
